The present study aimed to critically analyze the use of generative artificial intelligence, specifically Google Gemini, in the development of academic work and its impact on academic integrity in higher education. To this end, a narrative review of recent scientific literature covering the period 2020–2025 was conducted, examining its main applications, benefits, risks, and challenges. The findings revealed that Google Gemini is widely used by students in activities such as text writing, summarization, idea generation, and problem-solving, which contributes to information organization and enhances efficiency in academic tasks. Likewise, it was identified that artificial intelligence can support personalized learning by functioning as a virtual tutor capable of providing immediate feedback and adapting content to individual student needs. However, potential adverse effects were also identified, including reduced critical thinking, technological dependence, and the weakening of fundamental skills such as academic writing and analytical ability. Regarding academic integrity, relevant risks were recognized, such as AI-assisted plagiarism, the difficulty of distinguishing between human and automatically generated content, and the limitations of current detection mechanisms. In conclusion, Google Gemini is positioned as a tool with high potential for educational support; however, its implementation requires the establishment of clear ethical guidelines, appropriate pedagogical strategies, and the strengthening of critical competencies in order to ensure responsible use and preserve the quality and integrity of the educational process in higher education.
