Digital health literacy (eHealth literacy) as a public health promotion and prevention strategy

The digital transformation of health systems has expanded the use of digital technologies in health promotion, prevention, and healthcare delivery; however, gaps persist in the population’s capacity to access, understand, and appropriately use health information in digital environments. In this context, digital health literacy (eHealth literacy) has emerged as a key strategy for strengthening self-care, the adoption of preventive behaviors, and informed decision-making in public health. This study aimed to analyze digital health literacy (eHealth literacy) as a public health promotion and prevention strategy, considering its main components and its impact on self-care and preventive behaviors. To this end, a qualitative literature review was conducted, based on scientific publications in Spanish and English published between 2022 and 2025. The results show that digital health literacy is a multidimensional construct that integrates technological, cognitive, and critical skills, and that it is positively associated with empowerment, the adoption of preventive behaviors, and the appropriate use of digital health services. Furthermore, the strategic role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as tools for strengthening health promotion and prevention actions is highlighted. In conclusion, eHealth literacy constitutes a fundamental component for advancing toward more equitable, participatory, and prevention-oriented health systems.
