Uso del polietercetona (PEEK) como alternativa a las aleaciones metálicas en prótesis removible

El edentulismo parcial continúa siendo una condición frecuente que exige alternativas protésicas funcionales, estéticas y biocompatibles. Aunque las aleaciones metálicas, especialmente el cromo-cobalto, han sido utilizadas por su resistencia y estabilidad, presentan limitaciones asociadas con estética, peso, sabor metálico, electrogalvanismo y posibles reacciones alérgicas. El objetivo de esta revisión fue analizar el uso del polietercetona (PEEK) como alternativa a las aleaciones metálicas en prótesis removibles, considerando sus principios mecánicos, efectos del envejecimiento artificial y rendimiento clínico. La investigación se desarrolló como una revisión sistemática de la literatura, guiada por la declaración PRISMA 2020. Se consultaron PubMed, Scopus, SciELO y Web of Science, incluyendo estudios publicados entre 2014 y 2024, en español, inglés y portugués. Tras el proceso de identificación, cribado y elegibilidad, se incluyeron 21 documentos para el análisis final. Los resultados evidenciaron que el Cr-Co presentó mayor retención inicial; sin embargo, el PEEK, especialmente BioHPP y procesado mediante CAD-CAM, mostró mejor ajuste protésico, menor deformación, adecuada resistencia a la fatiga y comportamiento clínico favorable. Se concluye que el PEEK constituye una alternativa viable en prótesis removibles, aunque no reemplaza de forma absoluta al Cr-Co, por lo que su indicación debe individualizarse según las condiciones clínicas.
